Learn the Secret to Marginal Gains
British Cycling's transformation over the last few years has been truly outstanding. And this series of workshops will show how you too could achieve extraordinary things for your business by using the approaches they did.

Previous blogs have already mentioned the people and processes behind the dramatic change: we've already mentioned Sir Dave Brailsford and the Aggregation of Marginal Gains. But what we haven't yet discussed is what they did and how they went about it.

During London 2012 the BBC interviewed Brailsford about British Cycling's success – it's included as part of this video. With characteristic ease and friendliness he describes what they did. How they worked out what needed to be done and planned what would be done when. But it's as he concludes we get a glimpse of the real secret behind the wins. It's when, with a simple shrug of his shoulders, he says "then we execute the plan" that we get a flash of insight into why British Cycling has become great.

Because the word 'execute' hasn't been spoken by chance, it's been deliberately chosen. And it speak volumes. Because Brailsford's easy manner belies someone who's not just intimate with the demands of competitive sport, but someone who has huge reserves of grit and determination. Someone for whom delivery honestly matters. And when it comes to delivering plans Brailsford doesn't see them as something passive, he sees them as something to be chased down, made to happen and the benefits driven out.

This is entirely consistent with Marginal Gains – it guarantees everything gets done. And when you consider the range of improvements being effected it's no wonder. Because Marginal Gains demands everything gets looked at and improved. Fitness, nutrition, biomechanics, sleep and hygiene are just a few. So an attention to detail and a committment to being thorough are par for the course.
