What is the Best Shop Layout Award?

A shop is more than just space filled with stuff. How it rouses people to browse and engages them with merchandise will impact sales tremendouslyIt's a fact: present more products and services to customers and they'll buy more of them.

A shop is more than just space filled with stuff. How it rouses people to browse and engages them with merchandise will impact sales tremendously.

How the arrangement of furniture - shelves, tables, cabinets, gondolas and chairs – and products encourages perusing all around your store.

'Best Shop Layout' serves to recognise businesses that have really made use of their retail space to promote shopping.

What kinds of retail space count?

The award concerns use of the shops main retail space only. It applies to the part where the public browse. The part where the shopping gets doneThe Award concerns use of the shops main retail space only. It applies to the part where the public browse. It excludes dedicated workshop, office and storage areas.

Specifically the award focusses on the layout and use of overall space. In other words this Award is for the whole shop, not a specific display.

'Best Shop Layout' is about the overall look and arrangement of the retail space, not how you might have put together a specific display for say a laptop with case, external drives, peripherals etc. For that see ‘Best Internal Retail Display': this is the Award that recognises in-store visual merchandising. For 'Best Shop Layout' think ‘whole shop'.

What makes for a great shop layout?

A great shop layout meand different things for the shopper and the retailerOverall you can regard this in two ways. It could be simply a great looking shop. It could also be a less good looking shop that's made really good use of space – the two aren't the same but both could be great shop layouts. But when all is said and done, a great shop layout is one that works.

For the shopper a great shop layout is something that's easy to navigate and logical to use. Something that presents products and services where they'd be expected. And something that attracts and is interesting.

For you a great shop layout makes full use of all your retail space. Something that draws people in and generates a flow all around your shop. And something that makes sure you're reaping maximum sales per unit area.

Together these present a broad set of outcomes to try achieving perhaps, but fortunately ones retailers have already paid a lot of attention to. For much more see ‘10 Tips to Better Product Placement/Store Layout'.
