Target has just launched its brand new website with a raft of new features - many of which were suggested by the distributor's customers.
Target's Web Development Team collated suggestions from resellers to determine enhancements and features. A number of resellers who attended Target's NewTech event also volunteered to act as beta-testers for the new site prior to launch.
As a result, Target completely redesigned the website to create a web experience its customer base requested, with new features: price breaks for bulk purchases; easier navigation via streamlined menus; improved search function; dynamic filtering within search results and menus; recommended add-ons to all products; improved parcel tracking for consignments.
In addition, many products now also include a downloadable marketing materials tab where users can download web banners, email templates, posters and other materials directly from the product listing.
The new website will see more features added in the coming months.
Due to increased customer demand, Target has launched a new range of hard drive enclosures and docking stations.
Designed for resellers to use themselves in creating external hard drives, or to sell as is, the enclosure range includes 3.5", 2.5" and a new M.2 form factor. This allows resellers to create superfast portable drives from new, refurbished or existing hard drives.
The new range of docking stations include single and dual bays, allowing access to drives without installing them on a PC. In the case of the dual docks, SSDs, 2.5" or 3.5" drives can be cloned from one to another directly, again with no need to install on a PC - often used by resellers for repairs and upgrades or by system integrators to deploy operating systems quickly.

Three members of Target's staff have become qualified Ubiquiti Broadband Wireless and Ubiquiti Enterprise Wireless Administrators after a week-long training course provided by networking manufacturer, Ubiquiti.
Networking Category Manager Dan Hirst, Account Manager and Brand Ambassador Lee Stakes and Servers Plus Commercial Director, Jago Packer, are now officially qualified to carry out site surveys, design, install and run enterprise-level wireless networks as well as point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks.
Point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks have become popular for use by enterprises with multiple sites which can now be linked via a single network. The same technology can also be deployed in extra-urban areas to develop rural broadband networks.
In response to the large number of enquiries it has received since announcing it's official Ubiquiti distribution status, Target has set up a specific email address which will be monitored by the qualified team - email@example.com

Target Components's free event, NewTech, took place on Friday 25th January, comprising an exhibition, vendor presentations, a networking opportunity for resellers and, for the first time, auctions.
The event was an opportunity for over 100 resellers to see products from Target's latest brand acquisitions including Ubiquiti Networks, ECS EliteGroup, Thermaltake, Transcend, Linksys, F-Secure, QNAP and AVerMedia.
It also gave attendees the chance to see product ranges 'in the flesh' for the first time, including the distributor's own Evo Labs brand dashcams, QI compatible wireless chargers and hard drive caddies, as well as first-looks at imminent ranges of docking stations, hard drive replicators and disk enclosures.
Exhibition highlights included pro streamer Brin 'Wooly' Woolhead demonstrating AVerMedia's range of capture and streaming devices on the newly launched Resident Evil 2 remake, streaming gameplay in 4K to both YouTube and streaming site Twitch. Thermaltake offered advice and demonstrations on PC modding and liquid cooling, courtesy of professional modder, Adam Faulkner, whilst the ECS EliteGroup stand demonstrated digital signage using the manufacturer's flagship mini-PC, the Liva Q2, the World's smallest 4K PC.
Presentations around product roadmaps and range highlights were delivered by Transcend explaining its dashcam and Apple storage ranges, F-Secure explaining the opportunities around its VPN products and reseller scheme, Thermaltake showing its cooling and RGB offerings and QNAP discussing its home and business NAS devices and apps.
In line with the event's 'in with the new, out with the old' event moniker, Target also held a range of auctions where attendees could pick up a broad range of products at hugely discounted prices, including Microsoft Surfaces, motherboards, networking devices and gadgets.
The evening's events culminated in a free bar and meal, with many attendees staying to discuss business opportunities and catch up with vendor representatives, Target account managers and Target staff.

Target Components has been appointed official UK distributor of Ubiquiti Networks.

“Ubiquiti is a strong brand with excellent products and price points and we’re delighted to have them onboard.”

Target Components has been appointed UK distributor by motherboard and hardware manufacturer, ECS EliteGroup.
The appointment means Target now stocks ECS’s range of motherboards, barebones and small form factor PCs.
ECS (EliteGroup Computer Systems) was established in Taiwan in 1987 as a manufacturer of motherboards and, after merging with PCChips, extended its range to become one of the largest manufacturers in the World. The company has won several accolades including first manufacturer to produce a 64-bit motherboard, first to introduce dual-chip motherboards, and first motherboard manufacturer to be listed publicly in Taiwan, resulting in its first year of 1.5m unit sales in 2001.
This heritage and commitment to producing low-cost, high-quality motherboards has resulted in ECS being chosen as OEM manufacturer for several high-profile brands over the past 20 years.
Distributor Target now stocks ECS EliteGroup’s motherboard and mini-PC range, including the smallest 4K PC in the World, the Liva Q2.
Martyn Kirby, Target’s Head of Purchasing, explained: “We’re delighted to have ECS on board, they’re well-known throughout the industry for quality products. What’s less well-known is that they manufacture on behalf of several other well-known brands - many of our customers will have used ECS in the past, although they may not realise it. We’ll be showing the range at our free event, NewTech, on 25th January, including a demonstration of the formidable Liva Q2, the World’s smallest 4K PC which is ideal for a range of uses, including digital signage or as a powerful but discreet family PC.”
ECS EliteGroup’s European Sales Manager, Aurora Hung, said; “We are delighted ECS EliteGroup is being distributed by Target. Many of their customers will be very aware of ECS already but this is a great opportunity to get in front of lots of different types of resellers, from independent retailers to systems builders, repair specialists, value-added resellers and service providers. And we’re really looking forward to the response to our newest mini-PCs.”
The ECS EliteGroup range is now available at Target and will be being demonstrated at Target’s NewTech event in Castleford on 25th January. To see the range, click here.
Target Components has been appointed exclusive UK distributor by gaming manufacturer, Thermaltake.
Thermaltake was established in 1999, opening offices in Taiwan and the US simultaneously. Originally manufacturing air cooling for computer chassis, resulting in the World’s first turbine cooler, the ‘Golden Orb’, Thermaltake has become renowned for innovation, working with some of the World’s most well-known design houses such as BMW’s DesignworksUSA. In the last three months alone the manufacturer has won several accolades including an International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) and iF Product Design Awards for three different products.
The manufacturer has since become a World-recognised gaming brand amongst DIY enthusiasts and currently sponsors several esports teams, producing custom PCs for its players through its TteSPORTS division.
Martyn Kirby, Target’s Head of Purchasing, commented: "Thermaltake is another fantastic name to add to our roster with a proven pedigree of really high-quality and innovative design. Our customers will benefit from an integrity of pricing that allows for good margins and, most importantly, everyone being on a level playing-field."
He continued,"“I'm sure those who saw the range first-hand at the Open Day in September will agree, Thermaltake's attention to detail in the design of their products is impressive. But many were surprised how inexpensive they were considering the fantastic build quality."
Thermaltake's UK Business Development Manager, Ming Kei Wu, said; "We want Thermaltake to be recognised as the leading gaming brand and Target's customer base is a great way of achieving that. Their reseller customers, whether independent IT shops or system builders, have a wealth of experience and knowledge that will appreciate a diverse range of products. We’re confident they'll all be impressed with Thermaltake's quality and value-for-money."
Target Components has been appointed UK distributor by networking manufacturer, Linksys.
The distribution deal means Target now stocks Linksys’s portfolio of retail boxed networking lines that includes routers, switches and access points, as well as the latest Mesh WiFi technology and open source routers, many of which were on display at Target’s 20th Anniversary Open Day in September.
Established in the US in 1988, Linksys was purchased by Cisco in 2003, which also picked up a VoIP manufacturer and networking management software developer to benefit Linksys’s market share. Linksys was then then sold to Belkin for $500m in 2013.
Linksys’s heritage saw it become one of the World’s leading domestic router manufacturers, with nearly 30% of the market in 2013.
Martyn Kirby, Target’s Head of Purchasing, commented: “Linksys’s brand strength and range are fantastic news for Target customers. Being so well-known amongst domestic and business users alike means that the latest technologies, like the Velop Mesh WiFi system and open-source routers get into the public mindset quickly, meaning more sales for our customers.”
He continued, “And bucking the trend with open source firmware across some router lines means users have much more freedom to modify settings themselves. Mesh products have proved themselves to be invaluable in many homes and businesses where WiFi connectivity hits blackspots – Mesh simply works out the best possible route around them.”
Linksys’s Regional Sales Manager, Bukhtar Taggar, said; “Target’s broad customer base, particularly with the independent reseller and VAR contingent, is exactly what Linksys is looking for to reach those end users who want reliable next-generation technology with the support and reliability required for today’s usage. The Internet is used throughout the home, in very different ways depending on who the users are. It should be them, rather than the manufacturer, who decides what traffic is prioritised in their own environment, knowing they can get a fast connection wherever they are in any given environment.”
Target Components has been appointed UK distributor by graphics manufacturer, AFox.
The distribution deal means Target now stocks AFox’s entire portfolio of retail boxed Nvidia graphics cards.
Originally Foxconn’s branded graphics division, AFox became independent of the company in 2008. It’s reputation has since been built on producing state-of-the-art, stable and reliable graphics cards for major systems integrators and builders.
With over 20 years’ in-house engineering experience, the company invests heavily in its own Research & Development to produce consumer graphics solutions. Their confidence is mirrored with a 3-year warranty across the entire range.
Martyn Kirby, Target’s Head of Purchasing, commented: “We’re delighted to have AFox on board at Target. Not only are they a highly-regarded manufacturer with a 20-year pedigree but their graphics cards are excellent – well spec’d, attractively packaged and reliable but at pricepoints considerably lower than other brands.”
He continued, “And we are already seeing a lot of positive comment from our customers – they’re now able to offer Nvidia graphics cards that provide the reliability and performance end users expect, but the resellers themselves make decent margins in the process.”
AFox’s Global Sales Representative, Cathy Cai, echoed the sentiment; “Target’s ability to address all types of reseller, whether an etailer, VAR, system builder or independent retailer, is extremely exciting. We are aware of price sensitivity in the UK channel and understand resellers need to be able to offer products that are reliable and perform well but with the ability to make money at the same time– AFox graphics cards do all of that , and Target is very well-placed to take the brand forward.”
See the AFox graphics range here.
Open to all types of independent resellers, from bricks-and-mortar retailers and etailers to consultants and repair specialists, the awards are designed to celebrate their achievements and importance in the channel.
They cover eight different categories across a range of activities such as marketing, business ideas and social media but, uniquely, it is the resellers themselves who then vote for the winners.
Paul Cubbage, Target’s Managing Director explained, “The ShopTalk awards are the climax to the Open Day, a genuine celebration of those on the frontline. They’re there primarily for resellers to share experiences and best practice with each other. Target’s involvement is minimal, other than providing the awards criteria and means to take part – we don’t even vote for the winners, resellers do.”
He continued, “2018 marks our 20th Anniversary and what better way to celebrate than with the people who’ve supported us? We’ve seen some big highstreet names disappear in recent years but the indies are resilient. The awards are a way for them to shout about what they do, day in, day out. And by having their peers as judges in deciding the winners, the credit is genuine and nothing to do with spend or personal preference.”
This year’s Open Day will see the distributor host over 30 different exhibitors, business workshops throughout the day and all-night entertainment celebrating Target’s 20th anniversary.
Nominations for the awards are open now, with the winners being announced during the gala dinner on the evening of the Target Open Day on 21st September in Bradford.
Target Components has been appointed exclusive UK distributor for peripherals vendor, Genius.
The distributor will have access to Genius's entire portfolio of home and business peripherals as well as their newly-launched GX gaming range.
The Taiwan-based company, founded in 1985, has spent the last 30 years developing a broad range of high-quality products to compliment changing requirements in the PC and, more recently, mobile markets, leading to new product additions such as standalone Bluetooth speakers and mobile accessories.
Martyn Kirby, Target's Head of Purchasing, explained the appointment: "This is fantastic news. We’ve worked with Genius for years and our broad range of customers is really well-acquainted with their strengths – high-quality, robust products in really attractive retail packaging with plenty of margin for resellers."
Explaining their decision to consolidate all UK distribution through Target, Billy Tsai, Global Sales Manager for Genius's parent company, KYE Systems, commented: "Target is a key partner for Genius - their large customer base and breadth of independent retailers, etailers and system builder customers gives us excellent access to the UK market. With the addition our GX gaming range and Target’s focus on exclusive UK distribution, we are excited about the future of Genius as a trusted brand in the UK."
The Genius range of peripherals is also available on the In-Store PC Builder, Target’s free-to-use PC configurator that has recently been revamped for a more user-friendly experience.

Target Components has announced it will be hosting a reseller gaming event, called Gametech, on 12th January 2018.
The distributor is partnering with Cooler Master who are bringing their customised gaming bus, MasterRide, from Europe for the event, which will see a number of vendors exhibiting, demonstrating products and presenting their 2018 gaming product roadmaps.
Cooler Master’s gaming bus contains five high-end gaming PCs and will play host to a tournament running over the course of the event.
Target's Head of Purchasing, Martyn Kirby, explained more, "This is the first time we've hosted a gaming-specific event, but to be the only distributor to get Cooler Master's gaming bus is a fantastic way to start! Attendees will get the chance to try out the latest in the Cooler Master range first-hand, which will also help them sell more confidently.“
"And with the other high-calibre vendors attending, they'll get to see what's in store in 2018 – the latest motherboards and graphics cards from Gigabyte and their Aorus gaming range, Akasa’s latest RGB gaming mods and accessories, Tenda’s all-new Nova mesh WiFi units, and even an explanation of how BullGuard’s improved Gaming Mode modifies itself on their Internet Security range."
The event will conclude with the gaming tournament final and raffle draw which will see one reseller win a Cooler Master/ Gigabyte gaming rig to demo in their own store, amongst other prizes that include motherboards, graphics cards, gaming peripherals and t-shirts. After the prizegiving, attendees are invited to stay for free pizzas and an open bar until late.
Kirby continued, "GameTech is set to be a great day for attendees, for Cooler Master and all the other vendors, not to mention showing how Target’s gaming offering is growing and helping independent resellers benefit from this lucrative market.”
GameTech takes place on Friday 12th January 2018 from 2pm in Castleford, West Yorkshire.

Target Components has been appointed official UK distributor by peripherals and accessories manufacturer, Trust.
The partnership provides Trust with access to Target's broad range of customers that covers independent retailers, etailers and network specialists. It will also give Target customers access to a well-known brand of peripherals, including the Trust GXT gaming range.
Martyn Kirby, Target's Head of Purchasing, commented, "We're delighted to have Trust on board – the brand is well-known for great-quality, reliable products that stand out in a retail environment. And they show the same commitment to quality in their gaming products."
Trust's UK & Ireland Key Account Manager, Mario de Jager, said of the appointment, "Target's access to such a broad range of resellers and how it supports them is unrivalled in the channel. And, as a manufacturer, it’s great to see a distributor give so much focus to its brands."
Target will also be stocking Trust's updated GXT range at a time when gaming is experiencing accelerated growth – last week saw the announcement of the UK’s first esports millionaire, for example – where games releases are now as highly-anticipated as the latest films, with the highest rated games now outselling many high-profile move titles by a significant margin.
Kirby continued, "The beauty of the Trust’s GXT range is that it caters for all - from the casual gamer who wants to progress, to the more serious player who wants to use the same gear as the Trust-sponsored esports teams. Their commitment to quality translates right from the real, top-end products like Cada mechanical keyboards and high-dpi gaming mice, through to those who want a realistic gaming experience on a limited budget – they get high-performance gear at great prices, meaning they can use the remainder of their budget to upgrade their PC hardware."
"It’s great to be able to cater for all requirements with a single brand that still offers good margin to our customers.
Trust will be making their debut exhibiting at the Target Open Day on 15th September in Bradford. They will be hosting the gaming arena, where attendees can pit their skills against each other on a range of premium gaming titles. Then Trust range is available now.
Target Components has partnered with manufacturer Energenie to distribute their MiHome smart home products. The range includes electrical light and power switches, door, window and movement sensors as well as energy monitors, all of which are also available in ‘starter bundles’ with a heavily-discounted MiHome control hub included.
The partnership provides Energenie with a broad coverage of independent retailers, etailers and network installers via Target’s existing customer base. Conversely, the partnership also provides independent resellers with a widely-respected range of smart home products that can be sold individually or as part of an installation.
Target's Head of Purchasing, Martyn Kirby, explains: "we’re really excited by the opportunities Energenie’s MiHome offers our customers – 'Smart Home' is 2017's buzzword but there's a bit of concern that it involves a huge capital outlay. Fortunately, because MiHome is modular, you can start off with a couple of smart plugs and the control hub for under £50, then build up from there. Of course, that also offers resellers repeat business and installation opportunities."
To promote the MiHome range, Target has also launched an interactive microsite showing how various products interact in real life situations, whilst also demonstrating the capabilities of a smart home using preloaded scenarios.
Kirby continues: "If you search 'what is a smart home?' you'll get statements like 'a home equipped with lighting, heating, and electronic devices that can be controlled by smartphone or computer', which is true, but only in part."
"We believe it can be much more. It can manage itself using predetermined rules set by the user for how the user wants it to work. It can all be controlled via the app too, but that’s convenience and only a small part of what these products can do when working together. Providing a visual representation of the benefits of MiHome and the smart home in general will engage Target’s customers, educate them and provide them with the tools they need to succeed in this new market."
Energenie’s Commercial Director, Oliver Tadd said of the partnership: "Energenie is delighted to welcome Target Components on board as a new distributor of MiHome. As a UK leader in their field, we believe that the huge breadth of independent clients they have, combined with their expertise in helping resellers thrive, offers a huge opportunity for this sector to succeed in the smart home channel. We look forward to working with the Target team whom we wish every success, and anticipate a strong year of sales ahead".
Energenie will be making their debut exhibiting at the Target Open Day on 15th September in Bradford. The MiHome range, including discounted starter bundles, is available at Target now. Click here for the Energenie MiHome range.
Target Components’s annual Open Day will take place on Friday 15th September at The Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford, the distributor has confirmed.
The Open Day will see over 30 vendors and business services providers exhibiting the latest products, discussing market trends and hosting business seminars to over 300 attendees.
This is the second year the distributor’s annual event will be hosted at the venue after it moved from the Village Hotel in Leeds.
Last year’s Open Day saw the likes of Google, Amazon, Context World and GfK provide tailored business workshops, whilst Intel, Gigabyte, Kingston Technology and HP were amongst the brands providing insights on their product road maps and demonstrating the latest technologies, including VR.
"We put everything into last year’s Open Day and it paid off," said Target’s managing director, Paul Cubbage. "The feedback was amazing, definitely our best yet – the day was non-stop. But all the effort’s worth it when you see the impact it has on our customers – more focus, better information and, if nothing else, a big reminder why we’re all in the channel in the first place. So it’s a big ask to improve on it this year but I’m confident we will."
For more information and updates on the day’s events, click here.
As much of the channel languishes in post-referendum gloom and pre-election nervousness, distributor Target Components has announced a number of new hires across its sales and purchasing functions.
Following a recruitment drive, the distributor has added account managers Mani Atwal, Peter Masefield, Richard Dey, Paul Baker and team leader, David Bingham, to the Sales Team, whilst Beth Lockett has joined the Purchasing Team as buyer.
“It’s exciting for us to have such an influx of fresh energy and enthusiasm into the business” said Sales Manager Sonya Cubbage “but more importantly this allows us to keep improving the level of support we can offer our customers.”
The recruitment drive follows a substantial six-figure investment in a new ERP system in November as Target gears up for further growth.
“There’s been lots of focus on uncertainty around Brexit, but our focus is very much on the wealth of opportunity in the channel and making sure we’re best positioned to keep growing our share”, added MD Paul Cubbage.
If you believe the press, British businesses should down tools, shut up shop and hide in the cupboard, waiting for the End of the World to pass, only emerging into a post-Brexit wilderness of fallen British businesses and discarded, worthless £20 notes.
In reality, after the lies, panic and media furore over Brexit, nothing’s actually happened. The only thing we do know is the big, red button will be pushed by the end of March.
But, as the media went into Brexit meltdown, we were planning our Open Day, an annual get-together that includes exhibition, small business advice and socialising for IT resellers. It means hundreds of our customers travelling from all corners of the UK to spend the day with us; expert speakers giving up their time, free-of-charge, to give advice; exhibitors travelling from around the World to demonstrate products and meet our customers.
Would it still work in the post-Brexit ‘apocalypse’?
Well, fortunately we live in the Real World and our customers are SMEs, the 99% of UK companies that are the lifebood of our economy.
So, the fact that we had our biggest event to date – with record numbers of attendees, expert speakers and vendors – was fantastic.
What was even better was talking to our customers throughout the day and finding that the passion and excitement of running a small business is stronger than ever.
Seeing our customers leave buzzing with new ideas – no doubt helped along with free drinks and guest after-dinner speaker, Robert Llewellyn – was great to see. What an antidote to the media’s post-Brexit gloom.
The message was clear – whatever you throw at small British businesses, it does nothing to diminish their drive, passion and enthusiasm.
They just keep coming back stronger.
Target Components has been appointed UK distributor by security hardware manufacturer, NightWatcher.
The distributor will be stocking a range of ready-to-go HD security solutions, including two and four-camera plug ‘n’ play network video recorders.
Simon Hogg , Target’s Head of Purchasing, said: “We are delighted to add NightWatcher to the Target range. Their products provide a great opportunity to our customers – home security is growing in popularity and independent resellers are now able to offer products with good margins that are easy to set-up and can either be sold straight from the shelf, or as part of an installation.”
“As internet speeds have increased, the latest NightWatcher security technology is no longer reliant on separate lines, like in the old days of CCTV. And, as power can be delivered to the cameras over Ethernet, reducing costs dramatically. Consumers can also see what the cameras see via their smartphones, be it day or night thanks to inbuilt nightvision cameras and low-power LEDs, whilst the NVRs record everything.”
NightWatcher’s Director of Sales, Peter Bromage, also commented: “NightWatcher’s partnership with Target is a great opportunity for us to engage with the UK’s independent retailers, etailers and B2B specialists. Their broad range of customers has access to a wide end-user base, many of whom want a simple security solution but have been put off by high prices in the past – our products are great value and work straight from the box.”
Resellers will be able to see the NightWatcher range for themselves at the Target Open Day on 16th September in Bradford. They will be exhibiting alongside Target’s other new signings, E-Blue, Gigabyte and XFX as well as over 35 other exhibitors.
Target Components has been appointed exclusive UK distributor by global gaming accessories manufacturer, E-Blue.
The E-Blue range of gaming keyboards, mice, headsets and gaming bundles is now available via the Target website.
Simon Hogg , Target’s Head of Purchasing, said: “We are delighted to add E-Blue to the Target range. Their products address a huge opportunity to our customers: really high-quality gaming products in amazing retail packaging, but without the premium price tags.”
“Resellers are always on the lookout for new gaming products but are often unable to make money on premium brands in such a competitive marketplace. E-Blue manufactures to the same standards but cost a lot less. They offer excellent margins for the reseller and address the much wider audience of casual, home gamers, as well as those who take part in online and local gaming competitions but don’t have the budget to fork out £100 on a keyboard at the expense of other modifications.”
Jason Lo from E-Blue also commented: “E-Blue’s partnership with Target is a great opportunity for us to engage with the UK’s retailers, etailers and gaming specialists. Their broad range of customers has access to a wide end-user base, who can even include E-Blue products as part of their custom build designs.”
Resellers will be able to try the E-Blue range for themselves in an exclusive gaming arena at the Target Open Day on 16th September in Bradford. They will be exhibiting alongside Target’s other new signings, Gigabyte and XFX as well as over 35 other exhibitors.
The gaming crossroads and why PCs are its heart
VR, mobile and next-gen consoles are waving in a new era of gaming, with PCs at its heart.
For the first time, a host of separate hardware technologies are working together, rather than as separate entities vying for success, to form a ubiquitous gaming experience. Premium games can now be started, paused and continued across devices, with no interruptions.
But it is the PC at the helm, acting as the central hub of gameplay. The release of AMD’s RX 480 graphics cards finally bridges the gap between VR and home gaming. With the addition of a VR headset from a growing range of manufacturers, gamers can get the immersive experience on their own PC they’ve only been able to get at exhibitions and demonstrations.
As mobile technology, in particular connectivity, has improved with 4G and wireless hotspots, gameplay no longer needs to be scaled down on the move.
And specific technologies help bridge the gap too – Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere lets you start your game on your Xbox, continue on your smartphone on the bus, log into a PC at your destination and continue there.
But it is the PC that acts as the gaming hub. The interface, the graphics, the VR and the game itself are all reliant on it, in most cases.
And this hands resellers a massive opportunity. The newest technologies allow PCs to be built to fit the user – smaller form factors to fit specific spaces without dwindling graphics power, almost inexhaustible customisation options and a huge range of performance-enhancing peripherals. All of which resellers can offer to suit any budget.
Gamers come with a broad range of requirements and budgets. Of course you can buy the most expensive, most responsive keyboards, mice and vibrating headsets to give you a millisecond edge over your opponents. But £200 on a keyboard is beyond the budget of many players. Resellers should not forget, or ignore, the huge number of casual gamers who just want something better than their OEM wireless keyboard and mouse but aren’t prepared to fork out for the premium stuff.
The number of people playing PC games is growing fast, but not everyone’s going to be an eSports legend, just like not everyone with a car is going to compete in Formula 1. But they will aspire to it. In which case there are gaming brands, like E-Blue, aimed specifically at the gamer who wants the performance of premium brands at sensible prices that free up their budget for enhancements elsewhere. All the bells and whistles like mechanical keyboards and macro buttons on mice, just a fraction of the price. And they look great.
Of course, the biggest benefit of PC gaming over any other is that you can upgrade. More memory, faster processor, mechanical to SSD drives, the latest graphics – all can be swapped out for less than a new console. And the spec will be better too.
These are all opportunities for resellers, if they want them. Gamers, casual or otherwise, get enormously frustrated at the slightest drop in performance, so will need an expert to help when it inevitably happens.
So services like upgrades and system cleanses add another arrow to the reseller’s bow.
This new era of converged gaming wouldn’t be possible without the PC. Whether a seasoned enthusiast or 40-something novice, someone’s got to be there with the hardware they want at a price to suit. Consoles sell at a fixed price and can’t be upgraded.
The same cannot be said for the PC.
Gigabyte has appointed Target Components as official UK distributor for their motherboards.
Target is now official UK distributor for the full Gigabyte range, adding to their existing deal on Gigabyte graphics cards and peripherals.
"We visit dozens of resellers every week, and Target's popularity, reach and breadth is clear from their feedback. We were asked so often why Target weren't a Gigabyte motherboard distributor, we put the question to Target themselves", explains Gigabyte's UK Sales Director, Nigel Sutch.
"It quickly became clear there are so many other synergies. In particular, Target's uniquely customer-focused approach aligns with our own ethos of providing quality products backed up by first-rate service and support."
Commenting on the deal, Target's Head of Purchasing, Simon Hogg, said, "Gigabyte's product quality and brand strength need no introduction, but what's really impressed us is how they've developed their approach in recent years; their desire to work closely with the channel, their customer engagement and, in particular, their willingness to support resellers not just with products but with things like POS and even shop fit-outs."
Gigabyte will be exhibiting their motherboard, graphics card and peripherals ranges at Target’s annual Open Day on 16th September.
BIOSTAR Announces Dual BIOS Feature on Racing Series Motherboards
Maximum system protection and convenience for enthusiasts
April 15th, 2016, Taipei, Taiwan – BIOSTAR is proud to announce that all BIOSTAR RACING Series motherboards are designed with utmost protection in mind with the new BIOSTAR DUAL BIOS feature. There’s numerous advantage to having multiple BIOS in a motherboard and BIOSTAR has carefully crafted the DUAL BIOS feature to meet the needs of enthusiasts and power users as well as everyday users.
DUAL PROTECTION with Two BIOS Chips
With two physical BIOS chips, BIOSTAR motherboards allow two independent BIOS ROMs to be booted from. This provides a safety feature as well as a convenient tool for overclockers who might encounter system stability issues during system tweaking as well as troubleshooting possible issues caused by corrupted ROMs or a hardware failure. BIOS viruses that may attack the ROM are also mitigated as one can fall back to the secondary BIOS for system recovery. Users may run different versions of BIOS ROMs independently for maximum compatibility.
How to Use Dual BIOS?
To use Dual BIOS, select the desired ROM (ROM1/ROM2) via the onboard switch and power on the system. Be sure to note the active BIOS when you want to flash an update or reflash the existing version.
Do not use the Dual BIOS switch during a BIOS update since it will result to the corruption of BIOS ROMs.
Manual BIOS Switch
BIOSTAR RACING motherboards feature a manual BIOS switch to toggling between ROMs. The decision to go with a manual switch is to limit the possibility of corrupting the secondary BIOS with an automatic design. Other motherboards who utilize a dual-BIOS design utilize an automatic switching method which could potentially cause further issue when a corrupted BIOS or virus is automatically copied over to the backup BIOS. BIOSTAR’s manual switch design for its Dual BIOS implementation limits this issue by allowing each ROM to operate independently of each other.
The design concept of Beebox originated from one of the most common insects – Bees. Those small, light yet fast working invertebrates that harvest scrumptious nectar from flowers. ASRock's Beebox squeezes a cutting edge Intel N3000 SoC powered motherboard and other peripherals into a compact chassis to imitate the characteristics of a Bee, all but the distracting buzzing noise. In fact, Beebox is so silent that it may even be a bedroom PC for handling background processes while you’re sound and sleep.
For such a small system, Beebox has unmatched graphics performance. It is the only NUC to break Intel's limitations, packing two HDMI ports and a DisplayPort for supporting triple monitor, and the awesomeness doesn't end here. While other manufacturers' NUCs only support a single channel memory DIMM, ASRock's Beebox ignores these restrictions again to support dual channel memory. Hence, it's also the only NUC that is capable of displaying 4K video playback seamlessly, and in addition, it supports the latest HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) standard H.265 decoding.
Other notable aspects of Beebox include a free bundled remote controller, 802.11ac WiFi, plus it may also work as a wireless access point for other devices. Moreover, aside from the usual Type-A USB ports, once again Beebox is the world's first NUC with a Type-C USB port that allows devices to charge two times faster. All in all, Beebox is a small, fast and quiet mini PC that's scheduled to launch during July. Designed to fit in various settings and for a wide range of usages, Home theater PC, bedroom PC, Office Desktop or Industrial digital signage, have it your way!
The Super Alloy Series will receive several upgrades, but the biggest difference of all will be Intel's 100 Series chipsets which support Intel's 6th Generation CPUs, DDR4 memory and Type-C USB 3.1. The main spotlights of ASRock's Super Alloy Series motherboards will be no other than this year's COMPUTEX d&i Award winners - ASRock X99X Killer/3.1 and Z170 Extreme7. Not interested in yesteryear's M.2 or Purity Sound 2? Well, truth is ASRock wouldn't be impressed either, so allow us to give you a sneak peek of the latest PCIe Gen3 x4 U.2 interface and Purity Sound 3. Another huge star of the Super Alloy Series will be none other than ASRock X99E-ITX/ac, the world's first and only mini-ITX sized Intel X99 chipset motherboard, and also the winner of Tom's Hardware 2015 Editors' Choice and several other awards.]
It all started simply because we are fanatics when it comes to PC gaming. Especially in competitive or even relationship ruining games, where one must act swift, accurate and kill mercilessly, just like the Chinese view of a Praying Mantis. Hence, the ASRock Gaming product line and logo was born. One of the first new products to debut will be ASRock Z170 Gaming K6, an Intel Z170 chipset powered motherboard which mainly focuses on performance, stability, graphics and audio quality.
Besides gaming motherboards which anyone would have guessed, other ASRock Gaming products will include gaming mice, mouse pads and a 4T4R 802.11ac Router named G10. But that's only what ASRock is revealing right now, be sure to stay tuned for more surprises!
A new legion of low temperature and power efficient Intel SoC motherboards, otherwise known as the N3000 Series will be present at COMPUTEX. But we all acknowledge that showcasing mediocre stuff with standard specifications would only make everyone go "meh", so ASRock is bringing out the world's first N3000 powered NUC with Type-C USB 3.1, and also the only one to support dual channel memory plus triple monitor and 4k playback - ASRock Beebox!
As for industrial related computers, ASRock will exhibit numerous next generation IPC motherboards this year, to show that our motherboards are the foundation of building a sturdy system or even a strong enterprise. Featuring enhanced processing power, upgraded expandability, a wider variety of customization options, but most of all, emphasis more on system stability.
next day from £4.95, Saturdays and Sundays flat rate £9.75
As of 10th April, we're introducing a new reduced delivery charges for mainland UK deliveries.
Standard next day deliveries now start at £4.95 for orders up to 5kg, our lowest ever delivery rate.
Saturday deliveries are now available for a flat-rate of just £9.75. And just as you thought things couldn't get any better (!) ...
... we're reliably informed by DPD that 94% of their Saturday deliveries arrive before or just after mid-day. To be on the safe side, let's say 94% arrive by 12.30.
Not only can you have Saturday delivery for under a tenner, you're likely to get it by 12.30. It's our new Saturday "probably before 12.30" service!
But if you need it before mid-day and can't bear the 6% risk (!) we're offering guaranteed pre-12 Saturday delivery for just £14.95.
And for those of you who work Sundays, we're also offering Sunday deliveries for a flat-rate of £9.75.
As it approaches it's eleventh birthday, the channel's first fully-stocked customisable e-commerce platform has pretty much had its day
A lot's moved on in the last decade and a bit, and what we once saw as a revolutionary way to open up e-commerce to IT resellers is now, well, a bit tired. Over time it's been superseded by our other offerings such as Ready Built WebShop and Flexible Feeds.
And our thinking's moved on too. Unless you really know what you're doing and are prepared to devote the time and budget to making it work, selling online through your own site doesn't work. Platforms like TC-FreeNet still have a role to play in-store in customer engagement and conversion, but aren't a great tool for winning web business.
Effective use of the web for IT resellers isn't about having an ecommerce site, it's about being found, explaining what you're all about, and enticing local customers to contact or come and visit you. If you're interested and want to know more, we ran a workshop programme on it at last year's open day.
So what does all this mean for TC-FreeNet? In simple terms, it means we're phasing it out and the first stage of this is to stop what we call "development support". We'll still fix it when it breaks, but we won't develop or improve it or provide wider support such as help integrating it into other websites.
We know that many of you subscribe to TC-FreeNet mainly to register for our direct delivery service, so we've made some changes there too..
Direct Delivery Service
Originally introduced to support resellers using our e-commerce tools, our direct delivery service has always required subscription to TC-FreeNet or Ready Built WebShop. Since we're scaling back TC-FreeNet, and since many of you use the service to support our other e-commerce tools-Flexible Feeds or our XML service-or to support your own site, we're removing this requirement.
You will still need to register for direct delivery - for your security as much as ours - but registration will be free and will not depend on subscription to any of our web services. This means if you're subscribing to TC-FreeNet solely to be eligible for direct delivery, you no longer need to. You can cancel TC-FreeNet subscription at any time without affecting your direct delivery registration.
Our direct delivery carriage charge remains at £4.95
... with a health warning
It's worth pointing out that there are risks attached to web sales, and we would not recommend direct delivery to anyone unless you have robust anti-fraud procedures in place and are fully aware of and compliant with the Consumer Contracts Regulations (formerly the Distance Selling Regulations).
If you're thinking of selling online or of growing your existing online presence, speak to us first. We offer free impartial advice through ShopTalk, and we can help you understand the pros and cons of online business and make the right decision whether it suits your business.
If you want help with websites or any aspect of your business, you can contact the ShopTalk team on 01977 739300 (option 5) or email firstname.lastname@example.org. ShopTalk's there to help you (because that helps us in the long run), so feel free to make the most of it!
Many thanks to those of you who have completed our feedback survey over the last couple of months. It's things like this, plus the feedback you give us by email, over the phone or face to face, that help us to keep improving our service to you. You may well recognise some of the changes mentioned above from feedback you've submitted.
So it's not just important to us but-as long as we use it properly and make the improvements you want to see-to you as well, so please keep them coming.
For anyone who's missed it, a link to the survey is emailed after you've received a delivery, so please keep an eye out for it (and check your spam!). Don't worry, you only get it once, not after every order.
Our aim is to offer a level of service and support that is head and shoulders above other distributors, but we don't expect you to pay premium prices. As a distributor, it's key that we offer the right products at the right prices. The service and support simply gives you more reason to keep choosing us, but primarily we aim to save you money on your purchases.
It's also important to hold our hands up when we've got things wrong, and in terms of our pricing we've had a bit of a wobble recently. We made some changes towards the end of last year with the aim of improving things, but an inadvertent consequence was that some of our prices - in relative terms - sneaked up.
In most cases, this involved us failing to pass savings on to you. Frustratingly, whilst we could feel that something wasn't right, our key indicators didn't pick it up. Our systems failed not just in getting prices wrong but in failing to realise it.
In the end, as is often the case, it was specific customer feedback (you know who you are - and thanks again!) that helped us identify the issue.
This came to light fairly recently, and over the last few weeks we've been working through our range to correct things. We've also introduced new systems that should avoid it happening again. We're now pretty much back to where we should be, but we've also identified further improvements, and we’re now working our way through those as well.
The basic rule is that we should always offer highly competitive pricing that helps save you money and maximise your margins. If we're not, we're getting something wrong, so please let us know.
Last but not least ...
We've just had our year - end in March, and we've hit record sales for the sixth year in a row.
It may sound like we're crowing - maybe we are a bit - but it highlights two important things.
Firstly, it says we must be doing something right, and since the thing that is most unique about us is our customer ethos - our belief that helping our customers is a primary means of ensuring our long - term success - we take it as endorsement that that philosophy works. We do it because we believe it's the right way to do business, but six record years on the bounce suggests it's the best way for our business too.
Secondly, it tells us that once again we owe thanks to all of you who continue to support us year in year out by choosing to place your orders with us. Every business everywhere owes its success to its customers, and we fully understand and appreciate the contribution you make.
So, once again from all of us at Target .... thank you! And here's to another successful year for all of us.
The Target Team

GeIL's appointment is the latest in the distributor’s vendor acquisitions following the recent appointments of KFA2, Antec and Aerocool.
"We're in the middle of a major review of our vendor partners", explains Target's Managing Director, Paul Cubbage. "We only work with vendors who are genuinely excited about supporting independent resellers and can create real opportunities for our customers. We have more appointments due in the next couple of months but, as with any shake-up, we may be parting company with one or two that don’t share our customer-focussed vision."
GeIL is a leading global PC components and peripherals manufacturer, with emphasis on innovation - from memory modules and power supply units to gaming peripherals and accessories, aimed at PC enthusiasts worldwide.
Established in 1993, GeIL quickly became one of the world’s most trusted memory manufacturers noted for its reliability, unique heatsink designs and gaming memory.
Target’s Purchasing Manager, Kelly Coxon, said: "GeIL is a globally-recognized brand that has gained a dedicated following and fantastic reviews, particularly in the US. As high-end gaming memory has come into greater demand in the UK in recent years, we’re sure GeIL's reputation and high-quality product range will ensure its success here. We are looking forward to introducing the new EpicGear gaming peripherals to the UK too, particularly as high-end gaming accessories are in such high demand with professional gamers the world over."
One specific mainboard that Biostar will be showing is the Hi-Fi Z97WE, based on the Intel Z97 chipset with key features such as PCIe M.2 support, Dual GbE LAN and BIOSTAR exclusive Hi-Fi audio technology.
The Hi-Fi Z97WE comes with many Biostar in-house features like Hi-Fi audio technology. It is an ATX form factor board that features Intel socket 1150 support. It has 4 memory slots for up to 32GB of RAM. The on-board LAN controller also supports 10/100/1000/2000 with “Teaming” mode. The on-board HDMI supports 4K and 2K resolutions.
It includes the usual high-end motherboard features like USB 3.0, HDMI and PCI-E slots, including the newest PCIe development, the M.2 form factor. The M.2 standard is the newest and smallest form factor implementation of the SATA Express interface (which provides support for PCI Express 3.0 and Serial ATA 3.0), with the addition of an internal USB 3.0 interface. It supports multiple functions for add-in cards, including the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, satellite navigation, near field communication (NFC), digital radio, Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig), wireless WAN (WWAN), and solid-state drives (SSDs).
But being a BIOSTAR board, there is a premium set of features including the company’s new “Hi-Fi” technology. All the BIOSTAR Hi-Fi series motherboards are equipped with special components to ensure the best possible audio quality consistency.
The Hi-Fi Z97WE also features Biostar’s dual Gigabit LAN card functionality that takes networking and gaming to new levels. To achieve this, the Hi-Fi Z97WE has dual Gigabit LAN connections on the board that allow simultaneous LAN connections. The primary advantage is the doubling of bandwidth which allows the network bandwidth of 1G to become that of 2G. It also allows for Full-duplex transmission. Two network cards can be simultaneously transmitted to upload and download at the same time. In addition, there is zero packet delay with two high-speed gigabit networks, giving super high data transmission efficiency. Another major advantage is that of Load Balancing. This allows the user to attach both network adapters to a single network. This can allow for double the network bandwidth of a single connection under certain circumstances. It will therefore support the aggregation “teaming” function by merging the two connections to support multiple aggregation modes.
In addition, with Biostar’s dual Gigabit LAN connections you get network insurance. These boards come with two Gigabit Ethernet lightning protection circuits, there are cross-efficient in reducing the probability of damage from lightning or other power surge. So if one connection is disabled the other connection will automatically kick in.
Lastly, being based on the Intel Haswell chipset, the Hi-Fi Z97WE also comes with Intel SRT (Smart Response Technology), Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology), Intel Rapid Start Technology and Intel Smart Connect Technology all built into the system, ready to go.

The In-Store PC Builder is a development of Target's recently-launched Custom PC Builder that allows the same, unique configurator to be used in-store. Resellers can easily incorporate their own logo and branding, and have complete control over pricing, allowing them to impress their customers with both the range of bespoke systems they are able to offer and the quality of the configurator itself. The configurator has been developed in-house by Target over the last eight months and is offered free-of-charge to all Target customers.
The web-hosted service requires no software downloads or installation and can be hosted at on any computer in-store. It has also been optimised for mobile and touchscreen devices.
There are numerous benefits to the system, not least its ability to provide smaller resellers with the means to offer more system options than even the largest high-street chains and online retailers. Unlike other configurators, the In-Store PC Builder does not force the user to start with a base system; instead the user can start from as little as a stick of memory and build around it. The completed specs are then created as orders and built in-house by Target’s own system builders in a static and dust-free environment. They are then stress tested before being sent out to the reseller.
There is also no requirement for the reseller to have an in-depth knowledge of the components as the system is constantly updated with new products, specifications and compatibility, automatically. With over 20,000 checks already in place, the user can start with any single component and the compatibility of each subsequent addition is checked with all other components in the build.
The configurator also suggests better options when certain components are selected. For example, where the power supply wattage is only just enough to power a graphics card, the configurator will suggest a more powerful one to extend the life of the system, enable future expansion and overclocking. Where a CPU’s on-board graphics are superior to those on the selected graphics card, an alert will display detailing the issue, thus allowing users the option of reducing the overall build cost by removing the graphics card, or upgrading to a more powerful unit. The configurator will even check the compatibility of accessories and peripherals that are also listed as options.
Target’s Marketing Executive, Cory Lees, says "we believe the In-Store PC Builder is the most comprehensive system configurator anywhere and it could be the biggest advantage independent resellers have had over the chains and big e-tailers to date - no one else has anything like it! We launched the Target Custom PC Builder at the Open Day in September but, as soon as people saw it in action, we were inundated with resellers requesting the same tool to use in their own stores. It’s really easy to use and only takes 5 minutes to set up. Any Target customer has access to a unique URL and admin system to make managing the service as easy as possible."
He continued, "Being able to offer over 400 component options and the resulting millions of possible configurations is a massive boon Target customers. They can now offer really high-quality, professionally built systems, without having to stock the components. They can then create anything from one-off gaming PCs to multiple units for businesses and educational establishments. What's more, they can use the system on-site using a tablet or other mobile device and show their customers the cost at the same time."
The In-Store PC Builder is available now. A fully-integrated web version is currently in development for launch in 2014.
Security vulnerabilities in some Tenda home routers have been solved within two days.
Media reports of security bugs in the W302R and W330R models, as well as rebranded MediaLink routers, appeared on Tuesday 22nd October, a week after reports of similar issues affecting seven different D-Link routers.
D-Link committed to providing security patches by 31st October. However, Tenda has released their patches within 48 hours, after being alerted by their UK distributor, Target Components.
In a letter posted on the Tenda website today (24th October) the company apologised to its customers and said, “we promise that no other lines of Tenda have the same bugs after all lines were detected [sic] systematically by our engineers.” The letter also contains links to the security patches.
The reports emerged after a team of embedded-device hackers found that attackers could gain unauthenticated access to the routers’ administrative interfaces on the Web.
The letter from Tenda can be read below:
The Hi-Fi B85S3+ supports the Intel 4th generation Core i7 and Core i5 processors in the 1150 package using the Intel B85 single chip architecture. It has 4-DIMM DDR3-1600/1333 slots for up to 32GB maximum RAM capacity. The board supports DVI+VGA+HDMI for a high-definition image display and the Hi-Fi B85S3+, like all BIOSTAR motherboards, boasts 100% solid capacitors.
The BIOSTAR in-house technology, such as PURO Hi-Fi and audio and power regulation upgrades such as Hi-Fi Power and Hi-Fi AMP, a powerful built-in headphone amplifier, excels here as always. With the Intel chipset you get Intel SBA 2.0 (Small Business Advantage) Technology as well as Intel Rapid Start Technology and Intel Smart Connect Technology
The Hi-Fi H81 S3 is Windows 8 ready and has BIOSTAR’s BIO-Remote2 and BIOS Online Update feature for easy management of the system BIOS as well as BIOSTAR’s Charger Booster function.
These boards will proudly show off BIOSTAR's in-house technology, such as audio and power regulation upgrades such as Hi-Fi Power and Hi-Fi AMP. The video output includes HDMI with HDCP which allows full video & audio support via standard DVI output.
The "Hi-Fi H81 S3" is also PCI-E Gen 3.0 and USB 3.0 Ready. PCI-E 3.0 is the next evolution of the ubiquitous and general-purpose PCI Express I/O standard and USB 3.0 gives USB the fastest data transfers at 5 Gbps.
Unlike all other available configurators which start with a base model and allow the user to add/change components, the Target Custom PC Builder allows users to start with any component listed in the Target catalogue and build a system around it. Each component added has its compatibility checked with every other item in the build, ensuring that the finished system will work straight from the box.
The web-based Custom PC Builder is mobile and touchscreen compatible and provides an image of each system as it is created. A visual representation of each component is displayed so the user can ‘see’ the build as they are creating it.
The new, intelligent system will even suggest alternative components to those selected by the user. For example, where a 550W power supply may not be enough to power a system with an additional graphics card, the Custom PC Builder will ‘suggest’ upgrading to a higher wattage PSU. However, this is only a suggestion and there is no requirement to make the change.
Customers can also add the peripherals and accessories required to produce a complete end-user solution. In testing, the Target team were able to spec-up a fully functioning PC in less than 30 seconds.
Target designed the Custom PC Builder for its independent resellers to address their own customers’ specific requirements both quickly and without the build-time that often proves cost ineffective. Up to 10 configurations can be named and saved for use again, making the reordering process quicker, something that will be of particular use to those resellers addressing businesses and the education sector.
"The Custom PC Builder runs over 20,000 compatibility checks in each build, but this is growing fast as they we add more components every week," explains Target’s Product Marketing Executive, Cory Lees. "It’s a huge project to undertake but I think that time has been very well spent on producing something that is truly unique and useful to the vast proportion of our customers- you should have seen the queues to see the demonstration at the Open Day!"
Customers can choose to have the components delivered separately to assemble themselves or, for a small fee, have the system built by Target’s in-house team of system builders.
The “Hi-Fi B85N 3D” supports the Intel 4th generation Core i7 and Core i5 processors in the 1150 package using the Intel B85 single chip architecture. It has 2-DIMM DDR3-1600/1333 slots for up to 16G maximum RAM capacities. The on board DVI+VGA+HDMI supports 4K/2K resolution for a high-definition image display. The BIOSTAR in-house technology, such as audio and power regulation upgrades such as Hi-Fi Power and Hi-Fi AMP, a powerful built-in headphone amplifier, excels here as always. With the Intel chipset you get Intel SBA 2.0 (Small Business Advantage) Technology as well as Intel Rapid Start Technology and Intel Smart Connect Technology
The video output includes HDMI which allows full video & audio support via standard DVI output and the “Hi-Fi B85N 3D”, like all BIOSTAR motherboards, boasts 100% solid capacitors. The "Hi-Fi B85N 3D" is Windows 8 ready and has BIO-Remote2 and BIOS Online Update feature for easy management of the system BIOS
The ceremony was one of the highlights of the evening entertainment, with awards in ten categories covering various components of running a successful IT reseller business, ranging from Most Innovative Service Offering to Best Shop Window.
The ShopTalk IT Reseller Awards are the first to celebrate the work of independent IT resellers and their role on the British highstreet, with no voting influence from either Target or its vendors.
Nominations came from the resellers themselves and the winners were voted for entirely by their peers, other independent IT resellers. The awards ceremony was hosted and compèred by Target’s Managing Director, Paul Cubbage, with the awards themselves presented to winners by Target staff members.
Thanking those who had nominated themselves for the awards, Paul Cubbage said “It’s always easier with anything new to sit back and let everyone else test the water. You’ve had the courage and the confidence to put yourselves forward for judgement by your peers, and whether or not you win tonight you should be proud of that.”
The night’s winners were:
Best Use of PR/ Media Coverage – Gbiz IT Computers Best Shop Window – Diamond Media UK Limited Most Innovative/ Original Service Offering – Disc Co. Business Innovation – Diamond Media UK Limited Best Marketing/ Promotional Campaign – Grantham Computer Centre Best Shop Layout – Universal Computing Best Internal Retail Display – Airedale Computers Best Use of an A-Board – Senior Computers Best Event – Airedale Computers Best Website – Colley Gate Computers
Congratulating the winners on the night, Paul Cubbage added “You are now award winners. More than that, you are now winners of the only national independent IT reseller awards. And to top all that, you were chosen as winners by your peers, the people best placed to judge – other independent IT resellers.”
Double award-winner Paul Bailey, of Cleethorpes based Diamond Media, scooped two awards, Business Innovation and Best Shop Window. “We were delighted to win one award, but to win two was overwhelming. What means more to us is that it’s come from our peers. To know that they’ve voted for us is just amazing. It’s capped off a fantastic day for us, and the trophy will be displayed with pride in our shop window.”

The second workshop shows how the remarkable success story of British cycling can be used to create success for IT resellers. The workshop looks at where to find inspiration and how to identify the factors that lead to success and implement them in business. Using the British cycling model, the session shows how multiplying marginal gains can transform business, highlighting the small changes that can have the greatest effect.
Session three – "the truth about price competition and how to do it" – covers what price competition really means and how to do it well, when pricing really matters and the right and wrong ways to compete on price. This session covers a wide range of topics including the truth about Tesco’s exit from IT and how to become internet proof.
The fourth session rounds off the day with a series of practical tips on "how to compete so you'll always win", highlighting where and how indies should focus their efforts for maximum impact and how to really be successful with the ammo you already have at your disposal.
"Our customers aren't interested in sales pitches dressed up as advice or in the same old generic 'advice' dug up off the internet. They want practical help on how to genuinely improve their business. That's why we create original content for all our Shoptalk sessions based specifically on the needs of small IT resellers. Everything in the workshops is brand new content that has never been heard before or elsewhere, and that's why they prove so popular with our customers" said Target MD Paul Cubbage.
In addition to the ShopTalk workshops, Microsoft will also be presenting 2 sessions. The first will be on the new Windows 8.1. Its features and benefits and changes from the initial Windows 8 release and the second workshop will be on the features and selling Office 365.
The fifteen-thousandth spending customer occurred on 7th August, just 10 days before the distributor celebrates its fifteenth birthday.
"It's a nice symmetry that we’ve reached our 15,000th spending customer as we approach our 15th birthday" says Target MD Paul Cubbage. "It gives us a nice round average of a thousand new spending customers per year, but the reality is that the early years were much lower than that, with a real accelleration in the last five or so years"
The 15,000th customer, PC and Laptop Fix It of Heywood, received an unexpected treat as Target presented them with a Samsung Galaxy tablet.
With the Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) certification, BIOSTAR guarantees to deliver the most reliable, performance-driven solutions to power Microsoft Windows 8.1 and setting a standard for future Windows 8.1 certified motherboards.

The scoring takes in to consideration additional factors such as slang and usually known as terms as well as official brands and product names. The scoring process also incorporates an advanced weighting system for increased accuracy of the returned results. It also allows for more descriptive terms to be used while searching.
An example of this is the ability to now search for a ‘Micro USB lead in blue’. The new relevance search function will now return the exact lead as the first product, closely followed by other leads that also match the key words in the search term.
The introduction of the new relevance search is just one of the planned changes for the Target website. More announcements will follow.
The Yarvik range includes 7” to 13” tablets, available in black and white, and features the Android Jelly Bean OS as standard, up to 1GB RAM and A7 to A9 processors. It also includes the flagship Xenta model with IPS screen, as well as a range of accessories such as protective covers, styli and tablet stands.
All Yarvik tablets and accessories come in branded retail packaging to maximise value for resellers. The Junior Tablet features a rugged, child-friendly chassis, parental set-up feature and children’s apps and will be available at Target upon launch later this year.
Unlike many other tablet brands, Yarvik, an arm of accessories vendor, Sweex, also provides UK-based support via email or a freephone number, speeding up the returns and repairs process as both the reseller and end-user deal directly with the manufacturer.
Target’s Purchasing Manager, Kevin Barber, explained more, “We have tested several different tablet brands in the past year-or-so but none have come close to providing what we, and our customers, have been looking for in terms of quality, support and pricepoint. Yarvik does just that; great quality products with a good spec at great prices, and the end-user support is fantastic. There is plenty of margin to be made too, particularly when the tablets are bundled with accessories.”
“We did have a gap in our tablet offering, mainly caused by an influx of poor quality, although admittedly cheaper, varieties from no-name brands that disappointed many people through high failure rates. Target customers are not prepared to risk their reputations on selling hardware that does not live up to the job but Yarvik’s commitment to providing the support, combined with excellent build-quality, has given us the confidence to push the brand.”
Yarvik will be showing off its range, including the much-anticipated Junior Tablet, at Target’s Open Day on 13th September in Leeds.
Target Components has announced that the first ever Shop Talk® IT Reseller Awards will take place at its Open Day on 13th September.
Aimed at celebrating independent resellers and their place in both the channel and on the highstreet, the awards are for independent IT resellers, with winners voted for by independent IT resellers.
The awards comprise ten categories including ‘Best Marketing/ Promotional Campaign’, ‘Best Shop Layout’, ‘Most Innovative/ Original Service Offering’ and ‘Best Website’. They are open to all independent IT resellers, regardless of whether they are Target customers or not.
Paul Cubbage, Target’s Managing Director, explained:
“Indies provide the diversity, local support, expertise and passion that large businesses can’t hope to match, yet receive little recognition. Shop Talk® is all about supporting independent resellers to help them achieve their ambitions. It’s a natural extension that we should recognise achievements and celebrate best practice, and it’s important that the awards are exclusively for independent resellers with winners selected exclusively by independent resellers.”
The Open Day also marks the Target’s 15th Anniversary and will feature all-new Shop Talk® business workshops and exhibitions from over 15 vendors, including Cooler Master, ASRock, Veho, BullGuard and Three, as well as Microsoft who will be delivering training sessions throughout the day.
Vendors will be highlighting up-and-coming technologies and products, offering advice and help with existing ranges as well as meeting Target customers. Target expects the event – held at the DeVere Village Hotel in Leeds – to be their busiest yet, topping the 400+ resellers that have attended their previous Open Days.”
The evening’s celebrations will continue with a meal, bar, casino and entertainment set to go on until the small hours.

It seems crazy to think that five years have passed since we held our first open day to celebrate our 10th birthday in 2008. At that point, we'd no idea what to expect. We didn't even know if people would turn up. But turn up you did, and in great numbers. We were bowled over. We loved it, our vendors loved it, and most of all you - our customers - loved it.
So it was a no-brainer to have another one the year after. But now we'd given ourselves a new challenge, and one that we face every year: how do we make it bigger, better, and more beneficial than last year? This means introducing something new every year. To see a brief history of previous open days,
This year is no different. It's being held at the Village Hotel for the first time. We're extending the ShopTalk training introduced last year, we've more stands aimed at introducing new product ideas than ever before, and we're also holding the inaugural ShopTalk® Reseller Awards. I'd like to think there are more reasons than ever to attend, and even more ways that you will benefit from doing so.
I look forward to seeing you all there on 13th September.

Single Package Design IR has leveraged its world class packaging technology developed for the DirectFET®, improving the thermal capability and layout of the PowIRstage® significantly over that of other MCM packages.
Driver IC Developed by International Rectifier IR3550 PowIRstage® ICs feature a specialized MOSFET driver IC which is tuned perfectly for the MOSFET pair. Many Driver MOSFET companies use drivers from other companies, thus the drivers are not always optimized for the MOSFETs. With co-packaged Driver+MOSFETs, IR has designed this driver to optimize this module for greatest efficiency.
Industry Leading Peak Efficiency up to 95% IR3550 PowIRstage® ICs are more efficient, with peak efficiency up to 95%, during normal operation. Even at higher Current levels, IR3550 PowIRstage® ICs are able to maintain lower power losses. Lower power loss also means less heat as a byproduct.
High Efficiency = Low Power Loss = Less Heat = Longer Lifespan IR3550 PowIRstage® ICs remain cooler than other MOSFET designs, allowing users to overclock to greater levels of performance. Each power component has a maximum thermal operational temperature, and once it is reached, adding more voltage will only result in a failed overclock. Since IR3550 PowIRstages® are able to operate at cooler temperatures at higher voltages than traditional designs, overclockers are able to have more headroom to increase voltages, resulting in higher potential overclocks.
High Capacity Ferrite Core Chokes and 2X Copper PCB GIGABYTE Ultra Durable™ 5 motherboards feature High Capacity Power Stages and Ferrite Core chokes rated up to 60A with GIGABYTE exclusive 2x Copper PCBs to provide the most stable power delivery.

Today in 1982 was the launch of the Sinclair Spectrum ZX. One of the most ground breaking computers of its era. The brain child of Sir Clive Sinclair the original ZX came in 2 options. The 16kb Ram model for only £125. Yes you are reading that right, back in 1982 16kb was a lot of memory. Or if you wanted the top of the range you could opt for the 48kb model for £175.
The Sinclair was cheaper than any other computer on the market, and within the first 3 months they had amassed over 30,000 back orders. The Spectrum started a bedroom war. You were either a Spectrum or Commodore owner. It was like a football rivalry (without the terrace fights).
While not the most powerful computer on the market the Spectrum opened up basic programming to the home user, allowing everyone to design games. Many of today’s gaming companies can still trace their roots right back to the Spectrum. Code Masters were one of the original pioneers of games on the ZX with titles such as Dizzy.
Loading games was via a tape deck and the screechy whine became a universally acknowledged sound byte and the games made Minecraft look impressive but in 1982 it was nothing more than revolutionary.

Unique GIGABYTE Features Insist on Ultra Durable™ GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards support the latest GIGABYTE Ultra Durable™ 4 technology, embracing a range of exclusive technologies that guarantee DIY PC builders the absolute best protection for their PC. Specific features prevent common malfunction threats including humidity and moisture, electro-static discharge, sudden power loss and high operating temperatures.
Humidity Protection There is nothing more harmful to the longevity of your PC than moisture, and most parts of the world experience moisture in the air as humidity at some point during the year. GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards have been designed to make sure that humidity is never an issue, incorporating a new Glass Fabric PCB technology that repels moisture caused by humid and damp conditions. Using a new kind of PCB material which reduces the amount of space between the fiber weave, Glass Fiber PCB technology makes it more difficult for moisture to penetrate compared to traditional motherboard PCBs. This offers much better protection from short circuit and system malfunction caused by humid and damp conditions.
Electrostatic Protection GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards use high quality IC microchips that are rated with higher electro-static discharge (ESD) resistance than traditional IC implementations. GIGABYTE Ultra Durable™ 4 motherboards use ICs with up to 3 times the ESD resistance levels compared to traditional ICs. This helps to better protect the motherboard, its components and the PC in general against potential damage caused by static electricity, a common threat to today’s PCs.
Power Failure Protection If your office experiences a sudden power outage for any reason, GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards are equipped to ensure that you won’t be dealing with a fatal malfunction and use patented DualBIOS™ technology to provide fail safe protection for the BIOS on your motherboard, automatically refreshing your BIOS from a back up version in the case of a critical power outage.
GIGABYTE B75 motherboards also feature special anti-surge ICs that protect your motherboard, and your PC, from any surge in power delivery that may occur, helping to ensure that your PC is equipped to deal with any kind of irregular and inconsistent power delivery.
High Temperature Protection GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards feature specially selected components that make your PC capable of higher temperatures in more extreme conditions, while at the same time preventing your PC from overheating. Using all solid capacitors for the GIGABYTE B75 series both reduces overall board temperatures while, making the motherboard more robust at higher temperatures. The choice of Lower RDS(on) MOSFETs also helps to reduce operating temperatures significantly compared to traditional MOSFET solutions. These component technologies combine to guarantee enhanced longevity and stability for your PC.
GIGABYTE B75 motherboards feature GIGABYTE’s exclusive On/Off Charge technology. A derivative of GIGABYTE's highly acclaimed 3x USB Power feature, On/Off Charge technology allows iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices to draw more current from GIGABYTE motherboard USB ports than standard USB ports allow, with the added benefit that the PC can be on, in standby mode or even off. Many mobile devices can be charged via a desktop PC's USB ports as long as the system is connected to an active power source, however this is not the case with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Even when the PC is being used and charging is enabled, these devices usually only draw a mere 0.5A for a trickle charge that can take 3 hours or more to fully charge the device. The benefits of GIGABYTE On/Off Charge are that users can reduce their charge time by around 40% while also acting responsibly and shutting down their PC system while it is not in use, e.g. while they sleep.
Bucking the expected trend forecasts. There has been strong demand for desktop PC’s putting pay to the doom and gloom community who continue to repeat “the desktop is dead” adage.
Worldwide PC shipments increased 1.9% in the second quarter, up to 87.3 million units but even more of a surprise is that the Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region performed “better than expected” with the region making up 28.2 million sales. This is up 6.7% year-on-year.
The EMEA is expected to make up 40% of PC shipments this year showing further conscribed growth.
The new boards are based on the latest Intel Z77 chipset which, for the first time, incorporate tri-gate transistors manufactured using the 22-nm fab process, delivering a native support for the high-speed USB 3.0 interface and fast SSD caching thanks to Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT).
Fully compatible with the second-generation Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs, the new boards also support third generation Ivy Bridge CPUs, also manufactured with the 3D-transistors using the 22-nm fab process and designed for the popular LGA 1155 socket.
The new 4-year warranty shows the confidence that Biostar have in both their motherboard range and continued support they offer to both the channel and end-users.

In most traditions the day is known for the eating of pancakes before the start of Lent. Pancakes are eaten as they are made out of the main foods available, sugar, fat, flour and eggs, whose consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent.
For the perfect pancake, this recipe is by the domistic godess that is Delia Smith
For the pancake mixture
110g/4oz plain flour, sifted
pinch of salt
200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water
Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl with a sieve held high above the bowl so the flour gets an airing. Now make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Then begin whisking the eggs - any sort of whisk or even a fork will do - incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so.
Next gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture, still whisking (don't worry about any lumps as they will eventually disappear as you whisk). When all the liquid has been added, use a rubber spatula to scrape any elusive bits of flour from around the edge into the centre, then whisk once more until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream. Now melt the 50g/2oz of butter in a pan. Spoon 2 tbsp of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl and use it to lubricate the pan, using a wodge of kitchen paper to smear it round before you make each pancake.
Now get the pan really hot, then turn the heat down to medium and, to start with, do a test pancake to see if you're using the correct amount of batter. I find 2 tbsp is about right for an 18cm/7in pan. It's also helpful if you spoon the batter into a ladle so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it's tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife - the other side will need a few seconds only - then simply slide it out of the pan onto a plate.
Stack the pancakes as you make them between sheets of greaseproof paper on a plate fitted over simmering water, to keep them warm while you make the rest.
To serve, sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or else simply roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra sections of lemon.

In a move that redefines customer care for IT distributors, West Yorkshire based Target Components has hired its own full-time Business Adviser to work exclusively with its customers for free.
The decision was taken partly in response to the closure of Business Link's mentoring and training services as part of the public sector cutbacks, according to Target MD Paul Cubbage. "At a time when we need small businesses more than ever to fuel recovery, and when we are facing unique economic conditions, the support mechanism is being stripped back as part of the cuts" he explains. "We believe that we have a responsibility to our customers, and where we can help, we should. It's not altruism, it's just basic common sense: the more successful our customers are, the more successful we'll be."
Target has appointed experienced Business Adviser and successful small business owner, John Coulter, to the role. John will already be familiar to many Target customers having presented Business Link's "Build a Better Business" seminars at Target's recent open day. "As soon as I met Paul and when I presented at Target's Open Day this year it was plain this is a business that genuinely takes customer care seriously," he states, "and in taking on a dedicated Business Adviser, Target really has World Class aspirations. I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of something so innovative."
The move follows on from the launch of Target's business support microsite, Shop Talk, which provides advice, discussion topics, blogs, resources and useful links along with a discussion forum for Target customers to share ideas. John adds, "We also plan to roll out a programme of business workshops to both educate and share best practices. I'll also be providing intensive one-to-one support for customers interested in a full strategic review and business growth planning".

“Following the recent introduction of big.LITTLE processing and the ARMv8 architecture, the launch of Mali-T658 is another example of how ARM is seeking to redefine heterogeneous computing for the embedded space,” said Jon Peddie, President of specialist graphics research consultancy, Jon Peddie Research. “This will provide high-performance graphics and compute systems for low-power applications.”
Supported by lead ARM Partners, such as Fujitsu Semiconductor, LG Electronics, Nufront and Samsung, the Mali-T658 GPU enables an immersive visual computing experience on a range of ‘always on, always connected’ consumer devices. These include high-performance, energy-sensitive superphones, smartphones and tablets, as well as smart-TVs and automotive infotainment solutions. Building on the success of the Mali-T604 GPU, the Mali-T658 extends ARM performance leadership with scalability up to eight cores, and by doubling of the number of arithmetic pipelines within each of these cores. It is also compatible with the ARMv8 architecture.
“ARM is in a unique position to integrate CPU, GPU and interconnect technology into optimized, coherent systems, and by doing so improve performance and enable more efficient data sharing,” said Rock Yang, VP Marketing, Nufront. “This will allow partners, such as Beijing Nufront, to make the most of the leading capabilities of each system component and maximize throughput in ARM technology-based compute sub-systems.”
Delivery of a common set of compatible drivers for all Midgard architecture-based Mali GPUs enables faster time-to-market and minimizes software upgrade costs for future implementations. The ARM Mali-T658 GPU supports a wide range of graphics and compute APIs, including Microsoft DirectX® 11, Khronos OpenGL® ES, OpenVG™, Khronos OpenCL™, Google ® Renderscript ™ and Microsoft DirectCompute®.
The Mali-T658 has been designed to work seamlessly with the ARM Cortex™-A15 and Cortex-A7 processors either in standalone modes or in big.LITTLE processing mode. The autonomous nature of the Mali Job Manager, and its ability to carry on graphics processing with a reduced load on the CPU, means it is very well suited to work alongside a big.LITTLE CPU system. By using the right processor for the right task the Mali-T658 is able to handle GPU compute tasks in parallel with the CPU handling the always-on always-connected tasks. The ability of the Mali-T658 GPU to scale up to eight cores provides unprecedented energy-efficiency, flexibility and scalability to match the CPU and GPU performance points through one coherent interface.
“Next generation consumer devices based on the Mali-T658 GPU will address the growing user expectation for slick user interfaces and desktop-class graphics,” said Pete Hutton, general manager, Media Processing Division, ARM. “Intuitive user interfaces will mean that consumers can access the full functionality of their connected devices, for richer user experiences. This includes HD gaming and new compute-intensive applications, such as augmented reality.”
Importance of cache coherency in multicore CPU/GPU designs
Cache coherency is essential in multicore computing devices to maintain the consistency of data stored in local caches of a shared resource. This ensures optimum performance and energy-efficiency of complex heterogeneous SoC designs, and is designed to address next generation, high-performance computing devices. ARM system IP, such as CoreLink™, enables system level cache coherency across clusters of multicore processors, including the Cortex-A15 MPCore™ processors and Mali-T658 graphics processors.

In a move designed to provide its customers with a greater choice of brands, the distributor believes that Trust's ethos of providing extremely high-quality products at competitive trade prices falls in line with its own.
The appointment also provides the opportunity for the distributor to introduce lines hitherto unrepresented in the ever-expanding Target catalogue: not only will Target be listing the diverse range of Trust products such as keyboards, mice and headsets, they will also be stocking their wireless audio receivers, 5.1 surround sound cards as well as its extensive range of mobile accessories.
"We are very happy to have been appointed by Trust," said Target's Head of Purchasing, Kelly Coxon, "not only do they bolster our accessories range but the Trust brand is already synonymous with quality, whilst also offering our customers the sort of margins they are always after."
Its appointment by Trust is the latest in a long line of successes for Target in 2011; the Open Day in September was a very public display of the major brands it has secured as well as showcasing the distributor's commitment to providing its customers with the means to progress their businesses through its dedicated business advice portal, Shop Talk; the introduction of Target's range of in-house prebuilt PCs; the company's most successful year-to-date, achieving 40% year-on-year growth for the past five years, despite the current economic situation.
The Trust range will be available from Target as of 6th October, with additional lines added as they become available.
Measuring at 200x70x200 mm, this compact HTPC will feature Intel's Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs paired up with Intel's HD 3000 graphics and Nvidia's Geforce GT 540M 1GB graphics card, 4GB of memory, various storage options depending on the SKU and a DVD or Blu-ray optical drive.
The Intel HD 3000 graphics and Nvidia's Geforce GT 540M will work together with automatic graphics switching over Virtu tech and it will even have support for Nvidia's stereo 3D tech. As far as the connectivity goes, the new Vision 3D HTPC will feature four USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit LAN, HDMI and DVI outputs, and integrated 8-channel audio with optical SPDIF output.
All of Target's pre-built PCs have been designed and specified with the retailer in mind. Using only branded parts; they have created an initial range of 6 PCs to help provide the right system for the customer. All their pre-built PCs are both upgradeable and expandable and are supplied free of any restrictive OS.
The pre-built PCs are hand assembled to the highest standard, in a purpose built dust and static free environment, by their own dedicated expert system technicians with over 35 years experience between them.
Once the PC has been assembled it undergoes a rigorous-testing regime to ensure that all components are working without conflict, giving peace of mind that any pre-built PC you buy from Target will work straight out of the box.
All the pre-built PCs come with a 12-month collect and return warranty and a further 2 years return to base labour warranty, giving both the retailer and the customer total piece of mind.
Paul Cubbage, MD of Target Components said: In today's marketplace we all need to save time and money everywhere we can. Our pre-built systems will save retailers both time and money, which no-one can afford to waste.
Target Components will be showcasing their new system builds at this years' Open Day on the 16th September. Where you will have the opportunity to see the systems and talk to the technicians directly.

In an unexpected announcement, HP gave the strongest signal yet that the firm intends to distance itself from hardware and concentrate on greater success in the enterprise software and services markets.
That world's largest PC maker said that the firm would not only exit WebOS mobile hardware business but was also exploring a disposal of the IT giant's Personal Systems Group, the business unit that manufactures PCs and notebooks.
The diagram can be downloaded from HERE
GPU overclocking was formerly limited to the external tool AMD Overdrive but now the AMD Vision Center provides access to both GPU and CPU overclocking although CPU overclocking is limited to AMD's multiplyer unlocked 'Black edition' processors.
Other improvements include a claimed 10 per cent performance boost for the DirextX 11 version of Crysis 2 on the Radeon HD 6000 and HD 5000 series graphics cards and an 8 per cent boost for Fear 3 on the same video cards.
Call of Duty Black Ops players will also be pleased with a hefty 20 per cent performance boost on both single and multiple video card configurations.
The new drivers also fix a range of bugs including fixing hardware acceleration for the popular video player software VLC.
In the third quarter of 2011, 500GB hard drive prices will rise by 10%, while 1TB hard drives will rise about 5%.
After seeing the Japan earthquake significantly impacting upstream supply in the first half, and demand from the retail channel started turning weak in the second half, hard drive shipments in 2011 may stay flat on year for the first time, the sources noted.
Although rare earth material only account for a very limited proportion in hard drive production costs, due to prices increasing by 20-30 fold, the situation is already serious enough to affect hard drive pricing.
In 2010, China reduced its rare earth exports by 40% on year to 30,000 tons, and it continues to expanding its export limitations.
In addition to hard drive makers, the optical disc industry is being affected by China's export limits of key material TFP, causing a significant increase in the material's price, as a result most second-tier makers have already stepped out of the market because of the cost pressure, the sources added.
Since the hard drive industry only has three main players, Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba, leaving almost no space for price competition; therefore, hard drive makers should be able to successfully shift the increased costs to the market. However, as China continues to increase its export bans, hard drive pricing is likely to continue increasing in the short term.

We now expect every website and email to be a potential threat and we guard ourselves with firewalls, security software and malware protection at every corner. We also expect our ISPs to do some of the work for us in limiting the amount of spam we receive, and catching the emails that are obvious threats.
So why do we treat the smartphone as being immune to the same attacks and threats that force us to spend millions of pounds a year in protecting our desktops?
How many of us have the same, or equivalent, protection on the devices we use the most? Smartphones now use scaled-down versions of the operating systems we use on our laptops and PCs and are, therefore, at least as susceptible to such unwanted attacks. Maybe more so.
According to Claus Villumsen, mobile security expert at BullGuard, “Mobile users need to be educated about the increasing potential risk involved in using a smartphone to access the internet, send emails and perform financial transactions.”
Proof lies in the number of reported malware attacks that have been documented in recent months. Google Marketplace has removed several apps from its Android Marketplace after receiving a raft of complaints that they contained malware. Even Apple, hitherto the only organisation to escape such attacks previously, has been caught out with iOS now under attack from commercial malware.
Recent studies show a 250% rise in the number of malware attacks in the last six months alone. According to reports, the number of malware infections has leapt from 80 to 400 unique applications in the first six months of 2011. The chance of encountering an unsafe link is now teetering on 30%.
People are simply unaware not just of the number of risks, but that the risks exist in the first place when using mobile phones. In a report from BullGuard, 53% of British people surveyed were “unaware of security software for smartphones”, 21% believed it isn’t necessary and 42% had not considered using it.
Paul Cubbage, MD at independent distributor Target Components, thinks our priorities should be realigned: “We’re experiencing a huge rise in the demand for mobile spares for screen repairs, faulty jacks and accessories, but the number of requests for mobile security software are few and far-between. Every mobile user should be protecting themselves from the same attacks seen in the laptop and desktop world- there are products, such as BullGuard’s Mobile Security that mimic their desktop offerings in the level of security they offer, whilst remaining simple to use.”
This echoes BullGuard mobile security expert Claus Villumsen’s, assertion that it’s not just protecting yourself against online attacks: “Every phone lost or stolen is a potential threat- 88% of those surveyed claimed that they did not store sensitive data on their phone, yet we suspect that there will be an enormous amount of information collected on each device without the user’s knowledge. In the wrong hands you have exactly the same threat here as you would were you to lose your laptop.”
Cubbage determines that “we must start seeing our smartphones and mobiles not only as essential to our own lives, but also as an essential resource for hackers and criminals. The more we can do to protect our mobile devices, the more we do to protect ourselves.”
The OFT has suggested that the law no longer fits the current climate
Claudia Berg, director in the OFT’s Goods and Consumer Group said; “This recommendation reflects major changes over the past decade in the way consumers purchase household electrical goods, not least the growth of the internet. We are determined to ensure such industry-specific regulation only remains in place where it continues to be necessary to promote effective competition. Where it is no longer necessary, and we can use general consumer and competition law, we will always look to reduce regulatory burdens on UK businesses”.
The design seems to be based on information gathered from several Apple rumour websites. The spec seems to fall quite a bit short, The screen is a 3.5” resistive, the operating software is Java based and it has no on-board memory, but you can bet Steve Jobs and the boys are rounding up the lawyers as we speak.
The site was set up for avid fans to be able to gain further information and more stories about the famous Harry Potter.
The site does not officially open until October, but the scammers are already hard at work selling fake beta keys claiming to give fans early access, and using search engine poisoning to direct would be users to sites that are seeded with viruses or other malware.
Fake beta keys have been appearing on ebay and videos on youtube.
In a blog post, the Pottermore administrators said buying and selling accounts was "expressly prohibited" in the terms and conditions. Also, it added, signing up with a view to selling an account "deprives genuine fans the chance to gain early access".
It added: "We have the right to terminate any Pottermore accounts that are sold online."

AMD hope to dominate the entry to mid range of PC’s with the new Llano and it’s next generation on 32nm chips
Intel is scheduled to meet notebook partners in Taipei next week to discuss the BOM and other details relating to ultrabooks with an aim to control the initial selling prices of ultrabooks to below US$1,000, as they initially suggested.
So what do you do to combat this sort of crime? You can’t be everywhere all the time, nor can you afford to employ a security guard. So what options do you have?
Company’s like ADT offer a great range of security options but at a great cost, and in this day and age unless your losing £100’s per week it’s very difficult to justify the spend.
Target Components offer a cost effective way to solve this problem.
Keep an eye on your home, business, garage, school or even your holiday home - wherever you are! With a 4 or 8-channel DVR (Digital Video Recorder) you can monitor your premises from anywhere with an internet connection at the fraction of the price of traditional alarms and security services.
Featuring motion detection, audio, mouse support (mouse included) and a remote control the devices will support up to 1TB SATA hard drive which, due to the H264 video compression, will provide several days-worth of content at a time. To accompany the DVRs, Edge10's C171 hard glass CCTV monitor has been desined specifically for security purposes.
The DVRs even allow you to monitor from your smartphone (iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Mobile), with all the relevant software included in the box.
But don’t just think that this is a solution to security problems. The DVR’s have several applications.
Since the recent launch of the world’s first APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) from AMD, there has been a lot of benching going on to see if AMD really has created an onboard graphics solution that can compete head-to-head with the lower end discrete market. But many are asking the age-old question, “will it blend”? No, wait a second...we really don’t suggest trying that. The real question is will it overclock? During the month of August, GIGABYTE would like you guys to answer that for us. So, using any GIGABYTE A75 motherboard (learn all about them HERE), submit your best scores for each of the 5 stages using only the APU graphics…ie., no discrete graphics cards allowed. Since HWBOT is hosting, HWBOT rules apply. The first place winner gets a 990FXA-UD5 and second and third place each get a E350N-USB3. Good luck everyone!

Virgin’s London Wi-Fi network would offer speeds of up to half a megabit to everyone, but subscribers to Virgin services would see their speeds increase up to 10 megabits.
By increasing their robotic force they hope to increase productivity while reducing the amount of faulty products, which may occur due to human error.
The average UK broadband speed increased by 10 per cent in six months – from 6.2Mbit/s in November/December 2010, to 6.8Mbit/s in May 2011.
Almost half (47 per cent) of UK residential broadband users were on packages with advertised speeds above 10Mbit/s in May 2011, compared to 42 per cent in November 2010 and just 8 per cent in April 2009.
But the gap between actual speeds and advertised (‘up to’) speeds has also increased.
The average advertised speed in May 2011 was 15Mbit/s, 8.2Mbit/s higher than average actual speeds of 6.8Mbit/s.
In November/December 2010 the gap was 7.6Mbit/s (average actual speed was 6.2Mbit/s and average advertised speed was 13.8Mbit/s).

The change of plans comes on the back of the legal battle resolved in the courts this week.
Motion Pictures Association representing film studios. Won it’s court case forcing BT to block access to the website Newzbin2. The landmark case was won despite the fact that Newzbin2 does not actually host any illegal content, but shows users where to find the copyrighted material.
The court case was taken without using the new Digital Economy act, brining in to question the need for any such act.
Speaking to the BBC, Vince Cable appeared to suggest that the Newzbin2 case had opened-up other legal avenues. "We've discovered that the drafting of the original laws, which took place a year or so ago, were not tight. "There are test cases being fought in the courts, so we're looking at other ways of achieving the same objective, the blocking objective to protect intellectual property in those cases, but in a way that's legally sound.

Whilst squarer speakers suffer from echo as the sound reflects inside the speaker itself, K-World's system allows the sound to pass directly from the source to the outside:
K-World's build quality far exceeds that of its contemporaries, highlighted in the handbuilt, wooden-speakered, 40 Watt C40 set.
With a choice of USB or mains-powered models, the K-World range provides a deep, rounded bass, clear middle and fizzing treble without the tinniness associated with many desktop speakers, making them perfect for watching films or immersing yourself in the latest games.

The site – named “Shop Talk” – provides practical advice, support and resources to help Target customers to “build better business”.
The site hosts business topics, articles, blogs, downloadable resources and useful links along with a forum to allow resellers to share ideas and suggestions or to seek advice from their peers.
The launch follows Target’s recent announcement of record profits for the year ending March 2011 and is part of the distributor’s programme of ‘giving something back’ by introducing new ways to help their customers. Target MD Paul Cubbage explains: “It’s no secret that the last few years have been very kind to Target, and that puts us in the fortunate position of having the resources to do more for our customers.”
Cubbage explains the aims of the site: “Running a small business can be fantastically rewarding, but by nature of size there are unique challenges: it’s not easy to have all the skills and experience that you need in-house, and you don’t always have people to bounce ideas off. Shop Talk aims to help with both.”
The site carries the tag line “Building better business together” and Cubbage is keen to stress that it is through collaboration and the sharing of ideas and experience that resellers can best equip themselves for future success. “The aim is for our customers to interact as much as possible. There’s nothing more useful than sharing experiences with others in a similar position, and the value of the site increases exponentially the more people get involved.”
Cubbage is also quick to point out that the site is purely for advice, support and interaction and that Target have no intention of promoting products or attracting sponsorship via the micro-site. “It is not a commercial enterprise in the sense that Shop Talk will not generate revenue, but if each of our customers got only one useful idea from it that helps to improve their business, it can only be beneficial to Target as well.”
Highlights of the initial site include resources such as a marketing ROI calculator, blogs such as “10 ways to beat the big guys on price”, and of course the forum.
Shop Talk can be accessed via Target’s website www.tc24.co.uk or directly via this LINK

The accounts, filed last week at Companies House, show turnover up 13% to £19.8m and pre-tax profits up 56% to £700k, smashing last year’s record results of £17.5m and £450k respectively.
The results represent Target’s fifth consecutive year of profit growth of at least 40% per year. They also show significant growth in the last two years despite the weakness of the UK economy, with sales up 52% from £13m in 2009 and net profit up over 380% in the same period.
Target’s employees benefit from a 10% profit share bonus, with each member of staff getting an equal share of a bumper £80,000 this year, up from £50,000 last year.
Target primarily supply independent IT retailers and small to medium sized resellers, and MD Paul Cubbage believes that another record year for Target reflects the resilience of the independent sector: “Our success is reliant on the continued success of our customers, and our growth in the last couple of years demonstrates their ability to continue to thrive in a challenging environment.”
Cubbage also believes that demand in the economy will remain flat for the foreseeable future, but sees it as a primary responsibility of Target to ensure that their customers continue to succeed.
“We like to think that we do more than most to help our customers, but we aim to do much more. Our open day in September is based principally around business support, and we will be introducing a number of other initiatives over the next few months. This year’s primary focus is to improve the level of help and support that we provide. When the economy finally emerges from the flat conditions, we want all of our customers to emerge with us better and stronger than ever before.”
Not to be outdone, Biostar have also released a brand new H61 motherboard, which is also exclusive to Target. The new TH61-ITX is a small Sandy Bridge board, perfect for systems builders and those for whom space is an issue.
The first video added showed how to replace a damaged iPhone screen. The 10 minute video shows a step-by step replacement process, with all parts and tools being listed and available from Target Components.
The second video shows the new Gigabyte A75 motherboard coupled with the new AMD A8 chip. The video shows the combination of the motherboard and APU and the frame rates expected on new release games.
Further videos are planned for release showcasing products and "how to" guides.

Functionability is incredibly important for computing, so you’ll need to ensure you have the right motherboard. Supporting the Intel Smart Response technology, this board can make the SSD become the "Cache of the HDD" to boost up the HDD access speed. In addition, the ultimate Lucid Virtu Switchable Graphics technology allows dynamic switching between the GPU of the Sandy Bridge processors and a discrete graphics card, without the need for a system reboot.
The Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 comes with some VGA outputs, D-Sub, HDMI, DVI-D (supported by the bundled HDMI to DVI adapter), 7.1-channel audio with THX TruStudio™ and integrated Dual Gigabit LAN with Teaming function. To build up your unique gaming masterpiece, the Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 motherboard will surely serve all gamers’ needs very well.
When Intel released its Sandy Bridge processors in January, they were met with general applause and excitement. ASRock’s Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 mainboard is the first to meet the latest PCIe 3.0 standard and go on sale based on Z68 chipset. To be the very first to enjoy the advance function of PCIe 3.0, you should never miss out the Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3!

Leading UK distributor, Target Components, has been appointed official UK distributor for monitor and display manufacturer HKC.
With the Yorkshire distributor's unrivalled access to systems builders, etailers and independent retailers, HKC are keen to expand on their current market share in the UK with a range of monitors that perform to the highest of standards without the barrier of premium price tags.
Established in 1997, HKC Group has manufactured affordable but reliable displays, supplying leading vendors. The demand for these products grew so quickly that, in 2005, the company launched itself as a retail brand in its own right.
Through Target's national network of customers, HKC is now in a position to build upon its market, particularly within education and the public sector, where its products are highly regarded for their robustness and reliability. Home users will also benefit from the same high-quality, user-friendly products. In an exclusive deal, all HKC monitors purchased from Target come with a Three Year Warranty rather than the standard two-year available from other distributors.
The addition of HKC as a vendor complements Target's existing portfolio of monitor manufacturers that already includes leading brands AOC and Edge10. Following feedback from its customers, Target determined the requirement for another high-quality brand to run alongside its current offering.
Target's Purchasing Manager, Kelly Coxon, commented, "with HKC on board, Target is now able to provide displays for all requirements; whereas Edge10 provides the more application-specific displays required by retailers and businesses, and AOC's wide range of fast-response monitors are perfect for gamers and designers, HKC fits in perfectly as a 'catch-all' solution for schools, home users and those on a tighter budget. We are very excited to be at the forefront of HKC's business plan."
Target's annual Open Day has been announced as taking place on 16th September
This year's event will be focused on helping Target's customers, providing business advice in the form of presentations, workshops and seminars.
Target's Managing Director, Paul Cubbage, has written an open letter to all of Target's customers, outlining the events of the day and offering the chance for them to request subjects to be covered:
"A big part of this year's Open Day on 16th September will be focused on business advice. In association with organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses, Business Link, HMRC and others, we will be offering a range of business presentations and seminars throughout the day from a number of independent experts.
The intention is to cover as broad a range of subjects as possible during the day incorporating areas such as Sales & Marketing, access to finance, tax, credit and risk management, customer service, and so on. There are a huge number of topics available to us, plus the ability to bespoke presentations to suit specific requirements.
I aim to draft the seminar schedule over the next couple of weeks so that we can start to plan for the day and, rather than simply choosing the areas I think would be best, I would welcome your help in suggesting topics that would be most of interest to you and provide the most benefit.
Please email suggestions to email@example.com as soon as possible. This mailbox has been set up specifically for this purpose. All replies will be treated with strictest confidence, will be accessible to me alone, no record will be kept, and the information will not be shared with anyone else, so please feel free to reply with complete candour.
Your suggestions may be as detailed or as general as you wish. You may want to suggest a specific topic or simply highlight areas that you find difficult or challenging. Remember that the overriding aim is to help you generate more business and/ or to make your life easier, so feel free to send through as long and as varied a list as you wish.
We want everybody leaving this year's Open Day buzzing with new ideas and your input can help us to make that happen.
Many thanks in anticipation.
The full programme of events will be announced very soon! Click the Open Day banner on the Target website homepage for up-to-date information

Following two years of significant growth, Yorkshire-based distie Target Components is holding its first Recruitment Day on Friday 4th February 2011 in the conference suite at the Whitwood Inn, Castleford.
Target currently has at least nine new vacancies in various roles within the company, but is keen to take on more staff subject to finding “the right people”.
The recruitment follows a period of unprecedented growth, with turnover growing from £12m in calendar year 2008 to £20m in 2010, and staff numbers increasing by 40% over the same period.
The distributor is also enjoying its fifth consecutive year of profit growth. Target trebled profits last year and is currently on course to double them again this year (ending March 2011), all of which is good news for their staff who share 10% of profit.
The vacancies cover a number of roles within the company, including sales, business development, product management, purchasing, and technical, with the creation of new positions to facilitate increased levels of business and future expansion.
This will be the trade-only distributor's first Recruitment Day, with the decision to hold the event taken due to the unprecedented number of current vacancies.
Managing Director Paul Cubbage explains the importance of finding the right people to maintain Target's impressive growth:“Over the last two years, as most distributors have seen turnover decline or stagnate, we have grown sales by over 60% because we have expanded our customer base by the same ratio. Over the same period, our five closest competitors have seen their sales slide by an average of 16%. We believe we've achieved this because we look after our customers far better than our competitors, and we are able to do so because we have quality staff throughout the business that take a pride in the level of service they provide.”
Cubbage also believes that businesses have an added responsibility in difficult times to create jobs wherever possible. “As the VAT increase and government cuts start to bite, it's important that we all do as much as we can to create wealth and jobs in the economy. We’re in a fortunate position that we can do this whilst helping to fuel our future growth.”
The Recruitment Day offers visitors a chance to find out more about careers within Target and to meet members of the team. Representatives will be present from a number of departments to give details of current vacancies and future developments and there will be presentations and Q&A sessions throughout the day. The event is open to everyone, with doors opening at 10am and running until 2.30pm. Anyone interested in finding out more about opportunities within Target can find details on their website, www.targetcomponents.co.uk or simply attend on the day.
Yorkshire distributor Target Components has added networking manufacturer Tenda to its roster of exclusive distribution deals.
Long established in the Far East, Tenda is a recognised leader in domestic and small-business networking solutions. Well-known for its innovative, simple-to-use and cost effective solutions, it boasts providing the world's first installation CD among its achievements, allowing out-of-the-box connectivity within minutes.
Impressed with Target's channel penetration and the close relationships it develops with its customers, Tenda sees Target as the distributor of choice. Target also has an excellent track record in launching and re-establishing brands in the UK market, benefiting from its nationwide network of independent retailers, e-tailers and systems integrators.
Target's Purchasing Manager, Kelly Coxon, says, “We are delighted to have Tenda on board. Not only do they produce some of the most innovative and user-friendly networking solutions available, their universal 3-year product warranty proves their commitment to quality in such a competitive market. I am sure that Tenda will become as synonymous with excellent value networking in the UK as it has done in the Far East."
Marvin Luo, Tenda's Account Manager, said “Tenda has been looking for an appropriate distributor in the UK for a while now, and we have been impressed with Target's excellent track record in launching new brands. But, beyond that even, it is the customer-focussed ethics and determination of Target to provide an unparalleled quality of service that, we believe, will launch Tenda directly into the marketplace."
In adding Tenda to its catalogue of brands, Target further reinforces its presence in the channel, seeing the distributor grow by 70% in the past two years alone.
Yorkshire-based trade only distie Target Components has announced today that it is slashing its charges for drop-ship deliveries to a flat rate of £4.95.
The initiative follows a period of consultation with customers and reflects developments in the market over recent years.
Target Managing Director, Paul Cubbage, comments: "We were the first in the UK to introduce a customisable e-commerce solution for our customers in 2004 (TC-Freenet) and released a more advanced solution with full XML ordering facilities last year (Ready Built WebShop), but it''s become increasingly apparent that our customers need greater support on carriage charges to maximise their web sales. As with many of our more progressive initiatives, the decision to reduce our direct delivery rates to such an extent has come as a direct result of consultation with and feedback from our customers."
Target specialises in distribution to independent IT retailers and small to medium resellers, and believes that the model for retailers has changed over the last few years, with more and more reliance on web sales for a proportion of sales.
Cubbage states: "As the spending cuts, the hike in VAT, petrol prices and inflation start to really bite this year, consumers will be looking increasingly for two things from retailers: customer care, service and advice on a local level, and cheap hassle-free supply via the internet. Our customers already excel in local advice and service, and our reduced direct-ship rates help them to win more online business through competitive pricing."
The new rate is effective immediately and is a flat rate for UK mainland deliveries for registered customers.
New networking brand to the UK, Tenda, have received Computer Shopper's Budget Buy Award in the April 2011 edition of the publication for the W307-R Wireless Router.
Praised for ease-of-setup, speeds and ease-of-use, the W307-R has surely made an impression; the review ends, "For those with cable internet connections, the W307-R has all the features you need at a low price, and the fact that it achieves speeds over 40mbps makes it excellent value. It wins our Budget Buy Award."
Target is the exclusive distributor of Tenda in the UK, and the brand has being making waves, particularly due to the excellent quality of products, its low pricepoints and the 3-Year Guarantee across its entire range.
To celebrate another record-breaking year, Target are launching an “end of year” sale in March with discounts of up to 50% on over half a million pounds of products.
The Yorkshire based distributor broke all their previous records in the year to March 2010, with turnover up 35% and profits over three times their previous best, but have already smashed both records this year.
Celebrating a new record year before it’s even finished may seem a tad presumptuous, but according to Target’s Managing Director, Paul Cubbage, Target passed last year’s record turnover figure with over a month remaining, and surpassed last year’s record profit in November with over four months still remaining.
Cubbage claims that the month-long sale is not just to celebrate their record performance, but to thank their customers for their support throughout the year “at a time that really matters to them”.
“We had initially planned to have a big month long sale once we’d completed our year end, but as our sales team were quick to point out, it would be of less benefit to our customers in the summer when business tends to be a bit quieter anyway. After throwing around various suggestions, we’ve selected March because it’s not only our year end but also our busiest month of the year.”
The sale encompasses products from right across Target’s product range, discounting over 400 product lines worth over £1/2m, and is designed to offer “something for everyone”. The sale encompasses products from over 50 of Target’s vendors, but Cubbage is quick to point out that the sale is funded entirely by Target without vendor sponsorship.
Cubbage explains that the move is part of a process of “giving something back” to those who have helped with the distributor’s success over recent years. “We’ve always believed in sharing the benefits of our success with those who’ve contributed. We’ve done this for the last few years internally, by sharing 10% of our profits equally between all staff. This is simply another way of sharing the benefits with our customers, without whose support we couldn’t have hit the levels we have in recent years.”
The initiative follows Target’s recent slashing of drop-ship charges for its etail customers and is part of an ongoing review of all areas to, as Cubbage says, “add extra value wherever possible”, with more announcements promised over the next few months.
